Pylona (Pilona), Rhodes

The village of Pylona (Pilona) is situated 5 kilometres from the village of Kalathos and 46 kilometers southeast of the city of Rhodes. The name Pylóna comes from the name "pyli" which means "portal", as it used to be the portal of the south of Rhodes.

It is a small picturesque village with a total of 504 inhabitants, mainly involved in the agricultural industry. The tranquillity of the village of Pylona and the surrounding Olive Grove drenched mountains surrounding the village makes it one of the most unspoiled villages on the island.

Its short distance from Lindos (a mere 5 kilometers) makes it an ideal place to relax and the perfect base to explore the surrounding villages of Lardos, Kalathos and the area of Vlycha.

The churches of Pylona village, as well as many local monuments, were ruined by a major earthquake which struck in 1926. Today, there still stands the beautiful church of St. Nicholas and further on, the church of Evangelism, featuring Byzantine frescoes.
