Rhodes tops passenger traffic in July - stronger performance expected in August
Rhodes recorded particularly high passenger traffic in July 2026, ranking first among the 14 regional airports operated by Fraport Greece. At the same time, however, the increase in visitor numbers did not translate into an equivalent rise in spending in the local market. Early figures for August now point to an improvement, with both demand and last-minute bookings gaining momentum.
More than 1.33 million passengers in Rhodes in July
According to data from Fraport Greece, more than 20.5 million passengers travelled through the 14 regional airports between January and July 2026. In July alone, passenger traffic reached 6.9 million, an increase of 5.4% compared with the same month in 2025.
Rhodes ranked first across the network, handling more than 1.33 million passengers in a single month. This represents an increase of 5.3% compared with July 2025. At the same time, the island welcomed around 62,000 more international passengers, highlighting the continued strong demand from overseas markets.
The picture was somewhat different in Kos, where passenger traffic during the first seven months of the year recorded a slight decline of 0.7%. This difference shows that, despite the overall positive performance of the South Aegean, tourism demand is not developing uniformly across all destinations.
More visitors, but more cautious spending
Arrival figures, however, tell only part of the story. Despite the very high number of visitors to Rhodes in July, spending in the local market remained below the expectations of many tourism businesses.
The gap between visitor numbers and actual spending is one of the notable features of this year’s season. Higher prices and pressure on disposable incomes in several European countries may be encouraging travellers to manage their holiday budgets more carefully. However, the available data does not yet allow firm conclusions to be drawn about the specific reasons behind the more restrained spending in Rhodes.
August shows stronger momentum
The situation appears to be improving in August. Demand has strengthened, while last-minute bookings are also playing an important role. Rhodes and Kos are among the destinations attracting increased interest from travellers arranging their holidays shortly before departure.
For Rhodes, this development follows an already very strong July and creates positive prospects for the second half of the tourism season.
The final outcome of the season, however, will not be determined by July and August alone. September and October are becoming increasingly important for Rhodes as the tourism season extends beyond the traditional peak summer months. The strength of demand during the autumn will ultimately determine whether the high passenger traffic of 2026 is accompanied by equally positive results for the local tourism economy.
