Post Office and TUI Research
Significant price shifts for British families’ summer holidays have been revealed in the 17th annual Family Holiday Report by the Post Office, in collaboration with TUI. The study compared the cost of ten essential holiday items (like meals, drinks, and sunscreen) across 16 popular Mediterranean destinations.Although the cheapest destinations remain outside the Eurozone - with Marmaris in Turkey and Sunny Beach in Bulgaria topping the list – Greek destinations such as Crete, Kos, Rhodes, and Corfu continue to rank prominently, though with mixed price trends.
Crete: The Most Affordable Greek Destination
Crete recorded the sharpest price drop among all destinations, with an overall decrease of 7.8%, bringing the average cost down to £166.07. This moved the island from 15th to 7th place, making it the most budget-friendly Greek option for British tourists in 2025.
Kos: Consistently Competitive
Kos secured 8th place this year. Although its prices remained unchanged, its stable ranking highlights its continued appeal for families seeking affordable vacations.
Rhodes: Slightly More Expensive
Rhodes followed in 9th place, with higher prices than both Crete and Kos. While the report didn’t specify the exact price change, its position suggests it remains relatively affordable, albeit costlier than its fellow Dodecanese destinations.
Corfu: Among the Priciest Greek Options
Corfu ranked 12th, trailing behind more expensive destinations like Puglia (Italy) and Sliema (Malta). Although the report didn’t indicate a price trend, Corfu appears to be a less economical choice compared to Crete or the Algarve in Portugal - the cheapest Eurozone destination.
Key Findings from the Report
- Marmaris (Turkey) remains the cheapest spot, despite a 10% price hike.
- Sunny Beach (Bulgaria) is the second most affordable, even after a 17% increase.
- Algarve (Portugal) is the cheapest within the Eurozone, though prices rose 15%.
- Crete saw the steepest price drop (-7.8%).
- Ibiza was the most expensive destination (£242.79).
- Prices increased in 13 out of 16 destinations, indicating a broader trend.
- Families spent an average of £202 on kids’ beach activities and £378 on dining, often exceeding holiday budgets by 42%.
Recommendation: Plan and Research Ahead
Laura Plunkett, head of Post Office Travel Money, stressed that even with favorable exchange rates, rising local prices can push overall holiday costs higher. Thorough research and budgeting are crucial for cost-effective travel.
