Villages in Rhodes

In the mountain villages of Rhodes, some of which seem to be almost hidden on purpose, you can find some of he most beautiful sites of the island, far from the cosmopolitan settlements along the shore. Rhodes has 43 towns and villages, including the capital city of Rhodes.

A travel guide to all the villages in Rhodes

The villages of Embonas, Kritinia, Profillia, Monolithos, Agios Isidoros, Laerma, Mesanagros, Arnitha, Siana, Psinthos, Salako and Agia Eleousa preserve the native color of the Rhodian countryside with old castles, churches and beautiful buildings. In small tavernas you will find traditional island dishes. In the old cellars of the mountain villages you will sample the same Rhodian wine which used to travel to all the shores of the southeasern Mediterranean. 

Afandou (Afantou)

Located in the heart of Rhodes, the quaint village of Afandou boasts a rich history that dates back to the times of piracy in the Mediterranean. In those days, locals would retreat from the coast to seek refuge in the island's interior. The village's name derives from the Greek word "áfandos", meaning "invisible", as it was well hidden from the sea. As you wander through the charming streets and alleys, you can sense the spirit of times gone by and imagine the tales of seafaring adventure and survival that shaped the village's unique character.

Apollona

Apollona village acquired its name from the Temple of God Apollo who was the protector of Rhodes Island and fine arts at the time.

Archangelos (Arhangelos)

The village Archangelos (Arhangelos) is regarded very faithful to traditions. The centre of the village is dominated by the church of the Archangel Michael, with its fine campanile dating from 1845.

Archipolis

Welcome to the enchanting village of Archipolis (also known as Archipoli or Arhipoli), a lively, traditional gem nestled in the heart of Rhodes. Legend has it that the village's first inhabitants settled on the nearby mountain called Axintes. Steeped in history, Archipolis is said to be named after a Cretan prince, Archepolis, who sought refuge in this idyllic haven to recuperate from a grave illness.

Asklipio (Asklepieion)

In the southern part of Rhodes and not too far from the rapidly developing resort of Kiotari, visitors can find the small village of Asklipio. It features a superb Byzantine church and a medieval castle to offer as sights to its visitors.

Dimilia

Situated in the shadow of the mountain of Profitis Ilias, Dimilia is surrounded by a scenic and picturesque environment. Thanks to it's proximity to Eleousa village, both share the same lush greenery. They also share the same high quality of life, at a slow and relaxing pace.

Eleousa

Once you arrive to Eleousa, you will find yourself in a tiny village surrounded by plane trees, at the heart of one of the most verdant parts of the island, offering pure country air and purling sound of running waters.

Embonas (Emponas)

Embonas (also: Emponas or Embona) is the most important grape-producing village on Rhodes. Come around harvest time, and you will find the streets being full of baskets and the courtyards being spread with raisins soaking up the sun.

Fanes

Along the west coast road of Rhodes is the village of Fanes, just after of Soroni, featuring a picturesque harbor and a flat, isolated beach with tamarisk trees for some natural shade.

Gennadi (Genadi)

The village resort of Gennadi itself is a peaceful and quiet place with pink villas with towers and futuristic structures, virgin sands, hotels, and beach bars.

Kalathos

Partly traditional and partly a small resort town, the village of Kalathos offers one of the longest and most quiet beaches on the island.

Kalavarda

Kalavarda is a picturesque village built near the ruins of ancient Kamiros, around 800m from the beach. It is located about 30km from the capital of the island and 15km from the airport.

Kalithies

The village of Kalithies offers narrow alleys and numerous monuments. Kalithies, which is located on the north-west part of the island, 15Km from the city of Rhodes, belongs to the municipality of Kalithea, along with the villages of Koskinou and Psinthos.

Kattavia (Katavia)

Kattavia is an attractive farming village with a few old houses and a picturesque village square. It is popular with surfers since Kattavia is the village closest to Prasonisi, so it is no wonder that the few rooms available for rent are usually occupied by them.

Koskinou

House doors painted in vivid colors, made of wood or iron, with carved or etched designs. Little gardens with their cobbled floors hidden behind the courtyard doors. Koskinou in Rhodes is famous for its unique mosaic of colours.

Kremasti

Kremasti lies on the west coast. Its a busy village with rooms, apartments and a few package hotels.

Kritinia

The medieval castle that looks out over the sea towards Chalki, standing on a pine-clad hill on the north-western coast of Rhodes, welcomes you to the region of Kritinia - called the forgotten border region by the inhabitants of the village. What makes it really worth a visit is the wild beauty of the landscape.

Lachania (Lahania)

Two plane trees, four water troughs, six tables... and undisturbed peace and quiet. Around you are the low white houses of the village with their blue doors and windows, their tile roofs and carved stone gateways.

Laerma

Apart from a couple of excellent tavernas there is not much tourism happening in Laerma, although one of the main reasons for perhaps visiting the area is the Monastery Taxiarchis Michail at Tharri 4km southwest.

Lardos

The beautiful and friendly village of Lardos, is on the sunny south east side of the island, within easy reach to Lindos Town. Lardos offers all the facilities you would expect of a modern holiday destination.

Lindos

Bathed in the warm glow of the sun and believed to be blessed by ancient Greek gods, Lindos is an irresistible magnet for every visitor to Rhodes island. Its charming alleyways, breathtaking vistas, alluring scents of traditional cuisine, and cosmopolitan atmosphere form an unparalleled tapestry of unique character and warm, welcoming people that no one can resist.

Malona

Malona is situated on the south east coast of Rhodes, inland and within a beautiful, fertile valley. A farmers village, with most of the population concentrating on their famous citrus production, as well as good quality olive oil, or working in nearby Lindos and Archangelos.

Mandriko

Mandriko is situated on the western coast between Kalavarda and Kamiros Scala. It is a small village which produces almost 1/3 of all vegetables for the whole island, and from the road passing through, you can make out a large number of green houses and agricultural fields.

Massari

The village of Massari is located on the south eastern coast of Rhodes Island; it is a little village which is set in lush, green vegetation just off the main road.

Monolithos

Whitewashed courtyards with geraniums, stone houses with tile roofs looking out over the waves, the rocks with the mediaeval castle at their peak, windswept deserted beaches for playing games in the waves - a landscape of unspoiled beauty, difficult to find elsewhere on Rhodes.

Paradisi

Paradisi is a traditional village on the northwest coast of Rhodes where you will find many restaurants, byzantine churches and friendly people. The bus service from and to Rhodes city is excellent.

Pastida

One of the more traditionally modern villages on the island, Pastida is located slightly inland on the west coast of Rhodes. It is shadowed by the mountain of Filerimos, and its name in Latin means Castle.

Platania

Journey just 38 km from Rhodes town to uncover Platania, a quaint village with a mere 380 residents. Nestled beneath a stunning mountain backdrop, this charming hamlet boasts majestic views of the tranquil Rhodian countryside, inviting you to explore its captivating beauty.

Profilia

Profilia, a village situated on the slopes of the mountain Gerakas. It is another picturesque traditional village of Southern Rhodes with white -washed houses.

Psinthos

Very close to Faliraki is village Psinthos. Characteristics are the running waters in fountain Fasouli and the age long plane trees, which reveal the beauty of Rhodes countryside.

Pylona (Pilona)

The village of Pylona (Pilona) is situated 5 kilometres from the village of Kalathos and 46 kilometers southeast of the city of Rhodes. The name Pylóna comes from the name "pyli" which means "portal", as it used to be the portal of the south of Rhodes.

Rhodes Medieval Town

When you approach the walls of the Old Town of Rhodes, you are about to enter the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe. Do not be misled by the term "medieval" into thinking that what you will see is a ruined and deserted city.

Salakos

Once famous for the wooden chairs produced in the village, Salakos now gets used to tourism, although its 600 inhabitants still keep up their old traditions.

Siana

The village of Siana is built amphitheatrically on the slopes of Mount Akramitis, south of the City of Rhodes and north-east of the village of Monolithos.

Soroni

Soroni is a small village on the northwest coast of the island of Rhodes. The most popular religious festival on the island is held here at the chapel Aghios Soulas, which is located outside the village, every 29th and 30th of July, which is chapels saints day.

Tholos (Theologos)

A pretty colorful village with tall shuttered buildings and narrow streets, where the traditional way of life is still widely practiced, also featuring an excellent beach - although sometimes breezy.

Trianta

The village of Trianta, which can be found on the edge of the homonym gulf, has been built on the ancient Doric town of Ialyssos. Like the rest of the area, the village is very social and although it attracts of visitors every year, it has managed to keep its character of a characteristic Rhodian village.

Vati

Well hidden among pine trees and evergreen olive groves, the picturesque village of Vati is located on the southeast coast of Rhodes, 71 kilometers away from the beautiful capital of the island and in the direction of Gennadi and Apollakia. The name Vati probably came from the fact that the village was a passageway or from the word "path".

Apolakkia

Apolakkia lies in the hinterland, following the road from Gennadi to Vati. At the village square you will find one of the most beautiful buildings in the region, a classic sample of Italian architecture dating from the times of the Italian rule of the island.

Arnitha

Arnitha is a small picturesque village hidden amongst hills, on the left on the way from Gennadi to Apolakkia. It is in keeping with a small Dodecanese village with small white houses and is characterized as a traditional settlement.

Damatria

Damatria is an inland village located on the west coast of Rhodes. It is believed to be the only village of Rhodes dating back to the Dorian era in the 11th century B.C.

Ialysos (Ialisos)

Ialysos is the second-largest town on the island of Rhodes, located on the island's north-western coast.

Istrios

Just a stone's throw away from Profilia, you'll discover the charming village of Istrios. This quaint, picturesque spot welcomes visitors with a spacious, peaceful square that showcases its warm and hospitable spirit.

Maritsa

This is not a village you visit to see picturesque buildings or beautiful landscape, but to eat well and have a great time in a friendly atmosphere.

Mesanagros

Leaving Lachania and driving through a marvelous route, you will find Mesanagros. Messanagros is a traditional village hidden between the mountains.

St Isidoros (Agios Isidoros)

Agios Isidoros, a mountainous village 65 km from Rhodes town, with a height of 532 m is built on the eastern slopes of Mt. Attavyros, (Embona village).
